What's In Your Shopping Cart
Greetings!
Andrea's Lucky 7 Tips to Healthy Shopping:

1. Shop the Outer Aisles of the Supermarket. You will save time by not entering the jungle of the processed food aisles. In the time it takes you to figure out if its healthy, you could be home preparing a delicious meal.

2. Make sure your cart contains a variety of color: Not only will color will ensure that you have nutrient dense foods in your cart, but it will excite and satisfy the eye. This can ward off cravings!

3. Include healthy fats. Nuts, seeds, fish, avocado, extra virgin olive oil, grapeseed oil and organic unsalted butter. Choose nuts and seeds in their shell to snack on. It will keep your hands busy longer, requires a little bit of mindfulness and is fun! Be sure your oils are stored away from the light and come in dark colored glass bottles. Since salt is a preservative you may not know how old your salted butter is so choose the unsalted.

4. Fresh is best. While frozen and canned foods may be used as a convenience once in a while, fresh foods especially from local markets is your best choice for nutrient dense foods.

5. Be sure your cart contains Whole Grains like barley, oats, brown rice, quinoa, millet, etc. These can be used as breakfast, as a healthy lunch salad, a side at dinner, in soups or in stuffings like in peppers and mushrooms. They contain calcium, iron, B vitamins, fiber and protein too! When choosing pastas, breads and cereals be sure you can read the ingredients on the package and that they contain 3 or more grams of fiber.

6. Chose antibiotic and hormone free animal products. Remember hormones are put in the animals to make them bigger...when you ingest them, guess what...these hormones may make you bigger and increase the hormone levels in your system which can contribute to disease. The antibiotics in the foods contribute to antibiotic resistance today.

7. Avoid fat free products. Yes, choose whole milk and eat the whole egg including the yolk. Fat free products compromise your ability to absorb Vitamins D, A, E and K. These vitamins contribute to a healthy metabolism.
Remember: EAT REAL, BE REAL

Stay well,
Andrea Tortorella, HHC
